After a spell of 30+ years our "Sqeezy Jet" aircraft touched down at Romes international airport with an impending thunderstorm not far away.
After a relaxing stay at Gatwick the trip was pretty straight forward other than for the excitement of getting a downdraft on approach (thunderstorm related) that had passengers and self included nervously gripping our seats as the engine revs suddenly increased as the aircraft momentarily dropped. The other unusual piece of entertainment came while we were collecting our luggage when a Japanese tourist re entered the baggage are a with an armed Italian policeman in hot pursuit. Apparently the tourist had left his carry on bag behind and decided to risk the wrath of authorities rather than have it blown to bits as suggested would happen ( for unattended baggage) by the regular PA messaging !
Our b&b pick up was punctual and within 10 minutes we'd arrived at our well located and friendly local b&b. Bumping into a couple of nice Sth African guests we decjded to walk down nearby darkened streets to a local restaurant for dinner. "Do you reckon its safe" asked Andrew the burly Sth African - "much safer than walking around your country I replied" without hesitating !
Our local restuarant plied us with pizza, pasta, bruschetta and ice cokd beer to make us feel we were in Lygon street not Rome but still a pleasant way to spend the evening in good company.
Back to the b&b and time to relax before we venture to Romes port over an hour away to start what should be a fabulous Med cruise !
