Vikings Ahoy !

Omg how good is this - finally 8 hours sleep as the Nortern Lights finally failed to make an overnight appearance allowing our fatigued bodies to have some catch up time and for us to hit the road at the more civilized hour of 10.00a.m.!

After doing close to 500kms yesterday today was all about staying local as we left the cabin behind us and took in some nearby coastal scenery including rock formations and black sand coastline. Heading back we took up our cabin owners suggestion and took a road (more like a glacial river bed) inland across undulating unmade roads while trying to avoid hitting any oncoming cars (narrow roads) or driving over a precipice and plummeting into the river bed ! Eventually we could go no further whereupon i scrambled up a nearby hill to take in some pretty damned good views of a picturesque river canyon much like you would find in Nepal !

Returning safely and after resting like the old age pennsioners we soon will be, we headed on to Stokkenses a peninsular on a private road with stunning views of a black sand beach and nearby mountains !

While the views and the local settlement hisory make this place well known so does the former US radar station, a Viking village built as a film set (the location yet to appear in any movies) and more worryingly a farm owner (owner of the private road) who'd recently been reported in local media for threatening to knife a tourist who did not want to pay the private road charge !

We had no such drama but did pay quickly before taking in the late afternoon views competing with a nunber of photographers to take the best pics ! Walking to the Viking village was challenging on terrain resembling swampy quicksand but we made our way around the well created village with plaster used to create fake rocks and walls. The standout here though was the stunning location of the village once the site of the farm of one of the areas earliest settlers.

With time on the go we departed Stokkenses and headed into town at Hofn to do some shopping for dinner as well as take in fantastic views of the sun setting across the bay over the beautiful glacial terrain

All there was to do now was to head back to the cabin for dinner and wait to see if we would get one final encore performance of the northern lights !
